Moreton Island National Park: The island is the third largest sand island in the world and together with Fraser Island, Moreton Island makes the largest sand structure in the world.  98% of the island is part of the Moreton Island National Park

which has the World Conservation Union categorisation of II.

The island is bordered on the east by the Coral Sea, and lies 58 km northeast of the Queensland capital of Brisbane.

 The island is considered within the city limits of Brisbane and is divided into four different localities, Bulwer, Cowan, and Kooringal are all smaller townships with the bulk of the island falling within the Moreton Island locality.                                                                                  

The majority of the residential areas, along with the primary resort, Tangalooma, are located within the Moreton Island locality.

Moreton Island is one of the wettest parts of the city of Brisbane.

 It has evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year, which is uncommon throughout the rest of Queensland.

Moreton Island offers a variety of activities to its visitors.  Due to its proximity to

Brisbane, it is a popular destination for day trippers.  Visitors can find four wheel driving, camping, recreational angling, and whale watching on the island.

Camping and four wheel driving is only permitted with the payment of the necessary fees and permits, which must be obtained on the mainland.

In addition to the aforementioned activities, Moreton Island is also an ideal location for sand tobogganing, snorkeling, scuba diving, bird watching in the abundant forestland on the island, swimming with and feeding

dolphins, fishing, and parasailing.  Honestly, the opportunities for recreation are endless on Moreton Island!  Just make sure you have the necessary permits to partake in the activity of your choice before you travel to the island.

 Moreton Island National Park: How to Get There

Moreton Island is located 58 km northeast of Brisbane.  It can be accessed by vehicular barge or via passenger ferry services from Brisbane.  The ferry takes approximately 75 minutes to reach the island.
