Perths Cheap Eats is travellers dream, List of Cheap Restaurants in Perth
Perths Cheap Eats: Phi Yen
This Northbridge staple has been serving up authentic southern Vietnamese cuisine of consistently good quality for years. While mains cost in the region $18.50, they won’t leave you feeling hungry. The decor is nice and the menu is long. The rice paper rolls ($8.50) are especially good.
205 Brisbane Street, Northbridge; Enex100 Food Court, Perth CBD.
Iku Sushi
Sushi is not hard to come by but super-fresh sushi can be a rare thing. These guys have that and more. The creative menu includes traditional Japanese sushi with a pick’n’mix option and new takes on the ricey rolls. There’s sandwich-shaped sushi ($5.95) and breakfast sushi (bacon, omelette and Japanese mayo), as well all Iku’s signature sushi cheeseburgers (your choice of meat with mozzarella in an inside-out sushi roll). Half rolls cost just $3.50 each or you can get two or more for $3 each.
140 William Street,Perth
Perths Cheap Eats : Lido
A reliable place to go for flavour some Vietnamese fare. The mains push the $20 mark but are generously portioned. It’s a big restaurant with lots of staff so you get good service. It has a lively atmosphere and the noise level is usually on the festive side – meaning that is just perfect for social gatherings with large groups.
416 William Street, Northbridge; 460 Stirling Highway, Peppermint Grove
Tak Chee House
Some consider this the best place to get Hainanese chicken rice in Perth. Tak Chee deserves this reputation for its delicately poached chicken and more. The food is consistently good at oh-so-low prices. Whether it’s the curry laksa noodle or the mee goring ($9.50 each), you won’t hand over more than a $10 bill to roll out of here with a full belly.
364 William Street, Northbridge
The Moon Cafe
One of the original hipster hang-outs before hipsters were even called hipsters, the Moon can be relied upon for simple, cafe-style food long after Fat Cat has gone to bed. While the food varies in quality depending on when you go (and who’s in the kitchen), the servings are large and great to share with friends. The mains, which include pizzas, burgers, salads, calamari and more, range from $15-$20.
323 William Street, Northbridge
Juancho’s
With Mexican in vogue right now, you won’t find many places that are, a) that cheap, or b) not part of a national chain. Juancho’s is Salvadorian, not Mexican, and it’s been around for yonks offering warm service and delicious authentic food at great value (tacos cost about $10). The pupusas (thick, traditional handmade Salvadorian corn tortillas) are a great hangover cure. The surrounding markets offer loads of international food options that aren’t yet widely available in Perth.
Station Street Markets, Subiaco
Viet Hoa
You can often tell how good the food and prices are by the number of bums on seats. This is true for VietHoa, a stalwart of Northbridge’s cheap dining scene where punters come for the food, not the decor. The cuisine is mostly Vietnamese but also comprises Chinese and other Asian dishes. Try the bun xao (braised beef with lemongrass and rice vermicelli -11$).
349 William Street, Northbridge
Jean Pierre Sancho
This French patisserie was voted the best in Australia last year by the Lifestyle Food channel on Foxtel. We’re not going to argue with that. JP Sancho’s croissants, cakes and macarons are of incomparable quality and the bread is something else. But they haven’t let it go to their heads – prices are still reasonable. A sandwich, drink and a slice of Gateau Bigouden costs just $12.50.
878 Hay Street, Perth; 111 St Georges Terrace, Perth; 270 William Street, Northbridge
Perths Cheap Eats : New Moon
No, it’s not the second Twilight movie (thankfully), it’s dim sum. Great dim sum to be exact. For the uninitiated, Chinese dim sum are bite-sized portions of food usually served in steamer baskets with tea for yum cha (Chinese-style morning or afternoon tea). This bustling eatery provides the authentic yum cha experience – the dishes are rolled out on trolleys for you to select. You can eat your heart out there without spending more than $20.
63 James Street, Northbridge
Tong 86
This is the place to go for cheap K-barbecue combined with the sounds of sugary K-pop. Each table has a hotplate in the centre so you can grill your own at this Korean barbecue joint. A favourite among young Koreans after a late-night feast, it has a lively foreign atmosphere. You probably won’t get the best service but you will get a dining experience that differs from the norm and plenty of meat, meat, meat! Marinated scotch fillet is just $3.50 and kimji jjigae (traditional Korean stew) is just $6.
86 Beaufort Street, Perth
Alfred’s Kitchen
Hungry burger lovers need look no further than Alfred’s. Established in 1946, it was an institution long before burger bars started mushrooming. Prices range from $7.20 to $13.50 for the famous CRAM burger. It has a buzzing late-night atmosphere with an urbanspoon reviewer remarking: “This is about the only time I feel safe around bikie gangs. That’s how awesome Alfred’s Kitchen is”. Doesn’t that just say it all?
Corner of Meadow & James streets, Guilford
Cafe Mueller
Cafe Mueller offers quaint dining more akin to having dinner at the home of two eccentric European uncles. Based in a house on a suburban side street in Midland, it looks like any other home. But step inside and you’ll find a treasure-trove of delightfully kitsch bric-a-brac as old-school German music plays on a gramophone. It offers German homestyle cooking, with a set menu each night that includes dishes such as potato soup, schnitzel with red cabbage and black forest cake. A main usually cost about $14, entrees $9.50 and dessert $7: Wunderbar.
12 William Street, Midland
Tasik Indonesian
Stationed in an old blue house in the centre of Northbridge, Tasik has long been known as a place that won’t break the bank. It’s not too fancy and super laid-back with a very homely vibe. There is a wide selection on the menu at the family run restaurant that may bring back many a Bali memory (minus the Bali Belly). Bakmi goring (fried egg noodles with chicken, prawns and fish balls) will cost you $14.
63 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge
NORTH OF THE RIVER
Sparrow Indonesian Restaurant
The delightfully unassuming Sparrow has become an icon over the years for its low price tags and friendly service. Fast, tasty and MSG-free, you won’t be doing any fine dining but you will find excellent service, a rare quality in P-Town. Its funny owner is always there cracking jokes. Don’t go past the beef rending. Many consider it the best in Perth. Perfect for a lazy weekday meal (it’s not open on weekends).
301 Lord Street, Highgate
Perths Cheap Eats: Ploy Thai
Mayland’s main drag grows cooler by the day but this wee establishment has been around serving up scrumptiously aromatic Thai goodness for some time. DO NOT come here without ordering the red curry duck ($15). The combination of roast duck, sweet lychees and tasty sauce with a little kick will have you thumping the table with pleasure. Other stand-outs include the satay chicken sticks ($8 for four) and creamy green curry ($14). Rice costs just $2 per person.
65, Eight Avenue, Maylands
The Re Store
If you’re after top Italian nosh, look no further than the Re Store. The deli and liquor store has become an institution for its large selection of hard-to-find imported food and booze from Italy, Europe and Beyond. You’ll find tasty smallgoods, fresh pasta, cheese, antipasti, coffee, cakes and more. The continental rolls have been touted as Perth’s best.
231 Oxford Street, Leederville
Perths Cheap Eats :Marco’s organic Pizza
There are two simple reasons why this place has been around for decades – it does consistently tasty pizzas at reasonable prices. It’s cooked the Italian way with a light and crispy crust. The topping is fresh and plentiful. The large pizzas start at $17 and you can even make your own topping.
17 Wanneroo Road, Joondama
Perths Cheap Eats : Bollywood Spices
It’s hard to find good Indian food at reasonable prices in Perth but this unassuming venue is an exception to the rule. Tucked away in a little group of shops, Bollywood does all the classics, plus a good selection of vegetarian options. The saag paneer (spinach and cheese curry –$ 14) is a winner.
